Care Guide

Light

  • Polka dot grows well in bright light areas preferably near sunny windows.
  • But long direct exposure to the sun can burn the leaves.
  • In inadequate light, the plant loses its beauty and shape.

Soil

  • Hypoestes grow best in moist and well-drained soil rich in organic components.
  • Soil with a pH ranging from 6.1 to 7.3 should be preferred.

Watering

  • Polka dot can survive some of the dry time, but it grows optimally with plenty of water.
  • Do not let the soil get completely dry, water your plant on a regular basis especially when the uppermost inch of the soil seems dry.
  • Leaves may turn yellow if you overwater your Hypoestes plant.

Temperature

  • Hypoestes grow well in summer with a temperature above 60 degrees F.
  • The plant prefers a humid environment

Toxicity

  • Though considered non-toxic, it can still cause GI discomfort so it should be kept away from pets and children.

Points to Remember

  • Your Hypoestes get flowers in late summer during which the growth gets dormant.
  • Polka dots cannot survive freezing temperatures.
  • Prevent the plant from scorching sunlight.
  • Under watering may cause drooping of leaves, while over watering may cause leaves to turn yellow, so adjust your watering schedule.
  • Use insecticides if the plant faces houseplant pests.
